| Whitewater Kayaking in Nepal |
[12 Dec 2007|10:59am] |
Silkair return ticktet from STA travel: $1193/- 10 days whitewater kayaking with Equator Expeditions: USD400/- Insurance with AIG Singapore for 11 days trip (worldwide): $95/- Kayaking season in Nepal: Apr-Jun, Sep-Nov Equator's 10 day trips (Sun Khosi, Tamur or Karnali) usually in May and late Sep/early Oct.
1 Dec: Met Yongzhi and his friends (Jason, Naresh & Hui Fen) on Silkair flight. Arrived in Kathmandu. Stayed at Tradition Hotel.
2 Dec: Left Kathmandu for Sukute Beach Resort. Chris Ledbury (English) and Kuni (Japanese Senior) did rafting while I did kayaking at Bhote Khosi lower section (grade 3 to 3+). Kayaking guides were Razu and Stenzin.
3 Dec: Chris and Kuni did rafting while I attempted kayaking at Bhote Khosi upper section (above dam; grade 4 to 5). Capsized and swam. Joined Chris and Kuni for rafting instead. Great rafting due to the huge rapids and waves. Chris and Kuni left for Kathmandu in the afternoon. Walked uphil to Balephi town in the afternoon.
4 Dec: Kayaking at Bhote Khosi lower section with Razu. Walked downhill to Sukute Village.
5 Dec: Kayaking at Balephi Khola (grade 3 to 4) with Sam. Balephi Khola joins Bhote Khosi at Balephi town. Took local bus back to Kathmandu in the afternoon with Sam. Stayed the night at Tradition Hotel.
6 Dec: Took local bus to Pokhara from Kathmandu. Visited Phewa Taal (lake) and took the row boat ferry to Varahi Mandir (Hindu Temple on the small island in the lake). Stayed at Hotel Peace Nepal.
7 Dec: Took local bus to put in spot near to Baglung Town. Kayaking at Kali Gandaki (grade 3 to 4) with Sam. Pitched tent at a sandy spot with a few houses and lots of children. Had dinner (Daal Bhaat) at one of the houses. 4 children stayed there: Lakshmi (15), Parkash (12), Sitar (10) and small boy with long name (8). Their parents were working in Qatar and Kuwait; other houses nearby lived their relatives. Despite the humble conditions, it was a very warm and homely feeling to have dinner (cooked by Lakshmi using firewood) with the children. Stayed overnight in tent. Cold face. Brr...
8 Dec: Breakfast with the children. Very nice 'kalo chia' (black tea) made by Lakshmi. Broke camp and continued kayaking down Kali Gandaki. When we reached Seti Beni town, it was flatwater (due to dam) all the way until take out point Myrmar town. Took the local bus back to Pokhara Damside Bus Park. As it was late, we stayed the night at dingy Hari Krishna Hotel at Damside.
9 Dec: Supposed to go Seti River upper section for kayaking, but I woke up with back pain. So we went to Pokhara Lakeside instead. Had a good shower, and rented the rowboat for a leisurely row around Phewa Taal. Had lunch at Japanese restaurant Koto with Sam. After lunch, went for a walk along Phewa Taal towards Maya Devi Village (restaurant). Saw the paragliders landing at landing spot near Maya Devi Village. On the way back, saw some singer (presumably) filming MTV with Phewa Taal as backdrop. Stayed the night at Hotel Peace Nepal.
10 Dec: Took the tourist bus from Pokhara back to Kathmandu. Did some shopping. Stayed the night at Tradition Hotel.
11 Dec: Went to airport and took the flight back home.

I miss the days in UK when I missed local food and then coming home to find myself in food heaven... haha. Now that I'm back in Singapore for good, I don't miss local food anymore. Well, that should be obvious, but it certainly makes me appreciate the yummy food around me much less.
There are those days when I don't want to go out just to eat/ buy food... so inevitably I just go to one of the two coffeeshops downstairs and tar pau some food. Now I'm so sick of the same boring food at the two coffeeshops downstairs. Sigh. In fact, I have blacklisted and am boycotting the roast duck rice store and the 'cai fan' store downstairs coz the food they sell are so so overpriced and not really yummy either. =P
Well, human beings are creatures not easily contented after all.
P.S. I'm just griping coz I have to eat food from the coffeeshops downstairs again. If you bring me to some new corner of Singapore selling yummy food, I'll probably be happy. Heehee :)

| fond memories |
[30 Oct 2006|05:06pm] |
Wow, it's been almost a year since I last blogged. I revisited my blog to look for an entry where I had reproduced a story shared by Mr Lim Siong Guan (former head of Civil Service; currently chairman of EDB). I found it after going thru some entries.
But it was the reading thru my past entries that brought a smile to my face. Those entries brought back a lot of fond memories to me. Those uni days, mostly carefree and ocassionally busy... lots of canoe polo, lots of good friends, doing silly things, cooking and creating new dishes... those were the days! =D

Long time no update...haha. Been busy at work and have not had the urge to blog :P
Anyway, just want to ask around if anyone would be interested to buy MPH bookstore vouchers from me? I got S$50, S$20 and S$10 ones...to sell at 10% discount. They are valid at all MPH outlets (in Singapore only!) and are valid until 18 Dec 2006. However, they cannot be used with further discounts, not applicable for concessionaires, not redeemable for magazines and nett priced items.
Drop me a msg if anyone is interested k... I have quite a lot of them, so trying to turn them to cash, heeheehee...

Sheesh... I was so tired that as I was getting my hair cut from my neighbourhood hairdresser (only $8!), I kept falling asleep... I wanted 'high slope' and a bit off the top and fringe. Turns out my hair v v short now. But it doesn't matter, I don't really care also :P Most imptly, it's short, so it's not so hot. :P
Anyway, I had an excellent porridge buffet at Suntec City for lunch. It's the same restaurant (Joaquim) that has the steamboat buffet for dinner. There was such a wide variety of dishes... Hokkien, Teochew, and dunno wat else also... a HUGE spread and for a cheap price of only $9.80!!! And the price is NETT price, so there's NO service charge or GST on top of that. Simply unbelievable! :) I was definitely a satisfied (and very stuffed) customer. Can u imagine... $9.80 is cheaper than any other restaraunt meal you can find, and it's a buffet somemore! And the food was good lor... I had originally wanted to eat Japanese food, but changed my mind when I chanced upon such an irresistable offer. *drool*
I'll definitely go back there again... heh heh heh.

From 25 storeys, the roads, buildings and vehicles below look just like miniature model toys. So cute! :)
Haven't blogged for a while; just to update a bit now. I'm back home for good, currently on attachment now. My actual training course starts on the 25th July. Next week is orientation week before course starts (shld be boring but better than working :P).
I'm feeling the effects of working life... how it takes up most of your time and energy. No more late nights for me... on weekdays at least. Even sleeping at midnight leaves me pretty tired the following day.
Need to work out more. Haven't really exercised except for the once a week canoe polo training. Not enough for the competition coming up.

Did you know that when recycling paper, you can leave the staples on? :)
Yes, I wanted to throw away all my notes for recycling and was in the process of taking out the staples when I got fed up and searched the internet:
"White Office Paper
One of the highest grades of paper is white office paper. Acceptable are clean white sheets from the likes of laser printers and copy machines. Colored, contaminated, or lower grade paper is not acceptable. The wrappers the paper comes in are of lower grade, and not acceptable. Staples are ok. White office paper may be downgraded, and recycled with mixed paper." (emphasis added by me)
(source: http://www.obviously.com/recycle/guides/common.html)
Yay! So now I get to throw all my notes and readings away (into the recycling container in my kitchen) without taking out the staples!

Free at last; I'm free at last. I didn't sleep on Thursday night at all and didn't have time to check/proofread my dissertation, but whatever, it's over! Last count: 17986 words. A whopping 103 pages which includes 20+ pages of references.
I can't believe I actually exceeded by a few hundred words and had to edit it so that I could keep to the word limit.
Anyway, I'm off to Scotland tomorrow for a week. Going to the Orkney Islands to look at puffin birds. Yes, puffin as in Puffin books that puffin; the bird with the cute beak. There are a lot of them in the Shetland Islands, but I'm not sure if they'll be on Orkney tho. I'll be back on the 19th June. Ciao.

I have just included another appendix to my dissertation, in addition to the one I already had. It turns out that both have exactly the same number of words! 178 words each... even though they are from vastly different sources...so freaky. Too bad only 3 digits... cannot buy 4-D. Haha.
Maybe can buy 1783 coz 3 for '3 digits'. If anybody buys and strikes, must share share with me okay? :)
Currently I have 13380 words, but I've not started writing on CCTVs and street lighting yet, which are an important part of my dissertation. Deadline looms very near. Oops. Siao liao.

I had unagi bento from Teri-aki for lunch today. Expensive but yummy! Haha... splurging to make myself happier in this difficult period. Gotta keep myself in top dissertation-writing form. :P
Here comes one of my many theories. Zun's theory of utility maintenance just before exams or essay/dissertation deadlines:
As the deadline draws closer, disutility (unhappiness) increases because essay/dissertation-writing (hereforth I shall refer to essay/dissertation as the generic term essay)is depressing stuff and the stress to meet the deadline increases.
Increase in disutility leads to decrease in essay-writing ability as unhappy people are not in the mood to write essays. This is a vicious cycle as lack of progress in writing essay further increases disutility which further decreases essay-writing ability and so on.
The solution is to offset this increase in disutility by increasing utility in other ways; by engaging in activities that one enjoys, for e.g. consuming yummylicious food.
However, as we all know, yummylicious food doesn't come cheap where I live. Hence, to consume yummylicious food means to spend more $$$. Therefore, the problem can be construed as using $$$ to offset disutility and maintain efficient essay-writing form. The question is 'what is the optimal amount of $$$ to spend?'. This begs the question of personal disposal income and one's tastes in yummylicious food. Blah blah blah.
Anyway, the bottomline is, it is justified to spend more on yummylicious food in this difficult essay-writing period so as to maintain productivity. The side-benefit is that I get to keep my sanity.

I think their Tom Yum soup is the most authentic dish they serve. Sure beats all the buttery (aka college canteen) food I've been having.
3.5 days to handing in my dissertation. Freedom is within sight (though not the end of my dissertation).
P.S. The temp is 7.6 deg...no wonder I felt cold! Why is it so cold in June???

...a small, old dark room. The musty smell of ancient tomes of knowledge lingers in the air. By the flickering yellow candlelight, a solitary scholar sits in his armchair, bent over his tiny oaken study table poring over decrepit pages of manuscript turned yellow with age.
The ghosts of ancient giants speak out to him through the pages. As he leafs through the countless pages, he becomes more and more absorbed into the world of knowledge the gates of which were opened at that same instant when he, the reader, opened his book. The journey of knowledge is neverending; with each apple and pear he reaches out and touches, his amazement and wonder grows...

Sudden realisation that NEXT FRIDAY (yes, NEXT FRIDAY) it'll all be over. Whether I like it or not; whether I'm ready or not; whether I can finish or not; NEXT FRIDAY I have to hand in a mammoth (to me at least) 70+ page dissertation. And that will be the end of that.
And true to the sloth that characterises me, I've left everything to the last min (again!). I need another 9000 words more in this 1.5 weeks so that I can reach the word limit. Dum dee dum *twiddles fingers*
I tell myself "don't panic; everything's under control", but is it really? Maybe it might be better if I'm actually panicking - at least that'll get me off my lazy bum and start working my ass off. But for some strange reason, I'm still calm. Too calm for comfort if you ask me. I had a panic attack 1.5 weeks ago but it was over too quickly I think.
Okay...back to work.

Oh, I had 2 ostrich burgers for dinner today... yummy! There's a stall in Mkt Sq that sells ostrich burgers (cooked and raw) and ostrich meat every other Sunday. I bought some of the raw burgers (aka patty) and pan-fried them myself for dinner, along with onions. Added some sliced tomato and some ketchup... yum yum!
Interestingly, they turn a very dark colour when cooked, looking very much like beef... hmm... actually the raw ostrich meat looks like raw beef too. Well since I don't eat beef, ostrich meat can be my fake beef...hahaha. Apparently ostrich meat is low in fats and cholesterol, and healthier than the other meats like beef and pork.
